Mary's Plautz

1 ½ cups white flour
2 tsps. baking powder
¼ cup shortening
1 egg
½ cup buttermilk (or yogurt)
2-3 apples pealed and sliced, or several plums cut in half and pitted.

Mix the flour and baking powder, add shortening and mix into flour with a pastry cutter or your fingers. Make a well in the center of the flour, add egg, stir with a fork to break it up, and buttermilk, slowly incorporate the liquid. Turn out onto a flour surface, form a dough ball, then press into a ‘halvah’ baking pan, (7” by 12”) or equivalent size.
Place cut plums or apples and press in (slightly) on top of the dough. Do not overlap the fruit. Sprinkle with sugar, or cinnamon and sugar for apples.
Bake 350 F for 15-20 minutes, until done.
